I know quite a few people have registered LOTS of 3D domains (and, of course, other technology domains) and in my opinion, it’s a losing proposition most of the time. While I understand that being a part of “the next big thing” is always tempting, we need to be realistic and here’s what I mean:

Now all of us obviously prefer selling to well funded end users but what if you all of a sudden need to liquidate 500 domains? Emailing end users can work but scaling can be a royal pain in the you know what, so let’s face it: our industry NEEDS an active reseller market because without it, I’m not really sure we could call ourselves an industry and here’s why:

Popular domaining forums have hundreds of thousands of members but the thing is, less than 1% of the memberhsip base consists of people who actually earn a living online. When starting a thread or asking a question through a post, you have to ask yourself: who am I taking advice from?

The quality of type-in traffic as a whole is going down (read this post if you want to find out why) and has been for quite a while, advertisers are becoming better and better at filtering out traffic which doesn’t convert and this situation will only get worse. Lots of people are rambling (especially on domaining forums) about how in order to survive, domainers need to become developers. In other words, learn how to build sites, how to generate traffic and how to monetize that traffic. Oh really? Well, I strongly disagree and here’s why:

I was reading a comment earlier today and remembered that I’ve been meaning to post my opinion regarding the “do forums have a future?” issue last month but forgot all about that idea. Let me start by answering with two questions: do blogs have a future? What about email, does email have a future?

Remember Rick’s $750,000 iReport.com deal? Remember how many i+keyword domain name owners started daydreaming afterwards? Remember how many people started to foolishly invest in absolutely worthless i+keyword domains?

Rick Schwartz and quite a few folks are fighting a battle on an extremely complicated front: corporate end users. As domainers, we all want as much “fresh” capital as possible but aren’t we overlooking something? Shouldn’t we pay more attention to the potential end users who are right in front of us?
