The Economy Sucks but Maybe Things Aren’t *THAT* Bad!

Posted on 04 November 2011 by Andrei

I know, I know. US debt, European debt, worldwide debt. But let’s look at the big picture for a moment and I’m going to ask one simple question: do you think that those who lived during WW1 had it better? What about WW2? What about those who lived during the early 20th century… or those who lived during the 19th century perhaps?

Again, let’s look at the big picture. Don’t you agree that all in all, we’re not doing THAT bad?

Here are some facts:

1) The average worldwide life expectancy has increased in a spectacular manner. For example, during the 20th century, the average lifespan in the United States increased by more than 30 years, of which 25 years can be attributed to advances in public health

2) The average citizen of a 1st or 2nd world country lives better in 2011 than kings/presidents did in the past. Advancements in the medical industry, computers, the Internet and so on

3) Considerably more individual freedom if you live in a 1st or 2nd world country. How were things in Germany during WW2, for example? You know, less than 100 years ago? ’nuff said!

… the list could go on and on.

Most of you guys live in 1st and 2nd world countries, so everything I said is probably valid in your case. When it comes to certain 3rd world countries (especially some African and Asian countries), the improvements might not be as impressive but I’m sure you get the point.

It’s good to want things to constantly change for the better, it’s good to call politicians out whenever they screw up royally etc.

But every once in a while, looking at the big picture and being grateful that you live in 2011 might be a good idea.

Too much negative thought is not good but what do you think will happen to greece and other europe countries affected by debt?

@Xdreamer: if the system you’re trying to implement is unsustainable, it’s only a matter of time until you’ll end up paying for your ignorance. The economy is not doing great and getting back on track will be a painful process but this doesn’t change the fact that living in 2011 is not a bad deal at all if you analyze the past 🙂
