Congressman Darrell Issa asked one of the most ridiculous questions I ever came across: “Why do I have to pay $6,000, $8,000 or $10,000 for a domain because someone has camped on it?”. This is just unbelievable, a question which definitely deserves its own post IMO (I read it on TheDomains btw, I encourage you to read Mike’s entire post because the things that have been discussed can and will eventually affect you directly).
I can’t believe a US congressman can actually ask such a question, a question which goes against the very foundation of capitalism. Mr. Darrell Issa, I would like to politely ask you two myself if that’s ok with you:
1) Why can’t I move into your house? I mean come on, why do I have to buy it from you just because you “camped on it”?
2) Why can’t I drive your car? Why do I have to buy it from you just because you’re keeping it in your garage?
I want to make one thing perfectly clear: we are domain OWNERS.
O – W – N – E – R – S
Did I pay my renewal fee on time? Then it’s mine, period.
Maybe I want to just buy and hold, it’s my option.
I bought a domain, I want to keep it and do absolutely nothing with it. Is there anything wrong with that?
Buy and hold, a simple concept which is just as valid when it comes to domains as it is when it comes to real estate, precious metals or anything else.
“Why do I have to pay $6,000, $8,000 or $10,000 for a domain because someone has camped on it?”
For the same reason why I have to buy your house from you if I want to live there. For the same reason why I have to buy your car from you if I want to drive it. That’s why. I honestly can’t believe I have to write a post like this in 2011, wtf?

Domains are unusual things, and a seller may have an extraordinarily strong hand during negotiation. Firstly, they’re unique, unlike cars or property where a similar alternative is normally available or can be manufactured.
Secondly, unlike say paintings, where buyer may be just as happy with one Van Gogh as another, buyer’s choice of domain may be restricted. Due to name of his business or nature of his idea, one .com domain may satisfy his requirements far better than any other.
In most markets, the seller who won’t sell at market value is not causing a problem, because the buyer can avail of a reasonable alternative. But there may be no good domain alternative, and domains are created to be developed.
So hating domain ‘camping’, where domains are being made unavailable at market value, is probably something one could hate without hating capitalism.

The reality is just like buying real estate, a car or electronics, there are alternativves. Yes, the top of the line option is going to cost much more but if you aren’t willing to pay that price or even anything close to that price, eventually you will find a suitable option. Quite frequently businesses which see no reason to pay more than $10 for a domain get creative and come up with something which most domainers frown at. But they didn’t HAVE TO BUY the ideal domain for their business.

Like most that run for office today, Congressman Issa, is out of touch with most of us that need to make a living. It is VERY scary what is happening to the good ole USA. I am afraid it is going to get meuch worse before it getws any better.
The real problem with most of the politcal types is they think that they should be given your house if they want it.

I believe avoiding prepared foods may be the first step to lose weight. They could taste great, but highly processed foods currently have very little nutritional value, making you take in more to have enough energy to get with the day. When you are constantly taking in these foods, switching to whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates will help you have more power while consuming less. Thanks alot : ) for your blog post.

Congressman Issa is out of touch with most things but most of all the power of internet marketing. Congressman Issa needs to use the web a little better and make sure that good internet marketing is used to talk to the people of the web. the www is power.

Good observation, but I’m not positive that I fully concur. Had a bit difficulties getting the website to come up in my web browser.
