To Those of You Complaining That the Internet Is Shady

Posted on 22 November 2011 by Andrei

… just a quick question: do you really think that “more regulation” is the way to go? Be careful what you wish for guys because that wish just might come true.

In my opinion, the solution is education and not regulation. As time passes, people will become more and more informed and in my opinion, the Internet will gradually sort itself out.

Of course things are not perfect but come on, the commercial Web is not even 20 years old (again, I’m talking about the commercial Web, in other words the Internet as a medium available to the average Joe)!

Unlike many industries which went downhill, the Internet is becoming more and more useful to the consumer with each day that passes. From Google to Wikipedia to YouTube and even to Harvard courses which are accessible online. One step at a time, one website at a time.

More regulation is NEVER the way to go. Period.

It never ceases to amaze me how seemingly rational business people espouse views — like thinking that the government is the answer to everything, and can alter human nature with the stroke of a pen — that are to the left of Chairman Mao. That’s especially in this industry, it seems.

Agreed, education and moderation is the key. That’s why it was so important that the Republicans were thwarted in their attempt to deregulate and overturn net neutrality.

The power should be with the FCC to essentially maintain the standard of common carrier status with the internet, not hand it over to Verizon and others to create paywalls. The internet works just fine as it is. Sensible regulation, i.e. net neutrality like we have now, ensures that.
