From 1996 to 2011, Did the Internet Change Fundamentally?

Posted on 09 December 2011 by Andrei

In my opinion, the answer is no. Yes, it has obviously evolved and you can’t compare a website from 1996 to the current ones. But that’s not what I’m referring to when I mention the word “fundamentally”, what I’m trying to explain is that the #1 way to interact with the Web has not changed and in my opinion, it will not change: domains.

“But… but everyone uses Google!”

Sure, you’re right.

And how do they do that? By visiting Google dot com (or a ccTLD alternative).

“But what about social media websites like Facebook?”

What about them?

Same principle: you type in the domain, log in and do your thing.

“Oh yeah?! Then explain apps.”

Apps? Well, I have a question for you: do you think that launching an app without owning the domain is a good idea?

’nuff said.

    Agree, good post.

But what you neglected to say was that the sites that domainers create STILL LOOK LIKE WE’RE IN 1996. And that (especially) includes directory sites, as well as sites that were recently launched on ‘million dollar, single-word names.’

These folks really need to invest in some design talent, because I can tell you for certain that it’s out there – and incredibly affordable. Just visit a site like 99Designs.com, which I just used for one of my projects – and was blown away by the results.

doing things well is a big plus too. yahoo started geocities in 1996 as a social networking site but just let it slide into the mud.

It is the same old internet and it is only going a lot faster than before! It can burn its “tyres”.
    High Speed = High Risk
