What Domainers Can Learn from Rick’s Restorations

Posted on 01 November 2013 by Andrei

Yesterday, I explained why focusing on quality as opposed to quantity is the best approach in 2013 and beyond.

I’ll take it even further and say that all domainers should watch at least an episode or two of Rick’s Restorations. It’s basically a show about a very passionate guy (Rick Dale) who restores vintage items and things like that for his customers.

What does this have to do with domaining, you might ask?

Watch the show and you’ll understand.

You’ll see that Rick’s prices are not cheap.

If you analyze the look on most people’s faces when Rick quotes them the price, you’ll see that they don’t exactly think they’re getting a bargain. Yet at the end of the show, when Rick shows them what he managed to do, they’re all very happy and literally excited about the value they got.

That’s the #1 lesson you can learn from Rick’s Restorations.

The fact that focusing on quality, even if painful at first sight, is the way to go.

As mentioned yesterday, it’s fun to buy cheap domains and be satisfied that you got a bargain. With more expensive domains, it’s like with Rick’s customers, you might initially be uneasy about paying more than you’re used to for a domain just like many of Rick’s customers were uneasy about paying that much for a restoration.

But history has taught us that if you focus on quality, then just like Rick’s customers, you will probably end up ultimately being very satisfied.

Even if you overpaid for a great domain back in let’s say 2002, your return would be huge if you were to sell in 2013.

Whereas those who bought low quality domains in 2002 (lots of people did) thinking they got a bargain saw renewal fees piling up and in a lot of cases, they ended up losing money.

From Rick Dale to Warren Buffett, you can’t help but see a pattern.

Focusing on quality pays off in the long run, it really is as simple as that.

Excellent lesson Andrei. Now to work on the best points to highlight to a prospective buyer about what makes theirs a quality domain purchase.
