I consider myself a reasonably good investor, among other things because I don’t get emotionally attached to whatever it is I’m investing in. A lot of people think that selling domains at a loss is a huge mistake because the holding cost is only about 8 bucks/year. Those people are right or wrong, depending on how much liquidity the domain owner in question has.
Let me explain.
If you have lots of money that’s just sitting there than sure, why sell, especially at a loss?
For such people, the concept of never selling at a loss makes perfect sense.
But let’s be honest, not many people are in that position.
Therefore, the situation becomes completely different and the answer to the “should I sell at a loss?” question depends on what you want to do with the money.
If you need it to invest in something else that you’re confident would generate more $ than you’d make by holding your existing domain, then go for it. Sell, even if at a loss. That’s the rational thing to do.
If you want to be a good investor, making rational decisions is the most important thing.
The emotional decision would be keeping the domain and consequently saying no to the opportunity you needed the liquidity for.
The rational decision would be selling the domain (even if at a loss) if you can put that money to better use.
I know, selling at a loss sucks but that’s just the way it is, sometimes the right decisions unfortunately suck 🙂
