It Seems I’m “Officially” Smart… or Everyone Else Is Stupid :)

Posted on 08 November 2013 by Andrei

A while ago, I wrote about the fact that I was kinda-sorta interested in taking the official Mensa IQ test to see if I qualify or not.

Well, even though I had to go through the trouble of being there in person (you can’t do it online, they only have an online “teaser” to give you a general idea as to what you should expect but the real test is offline, at least in my country), I ended up deciding to do it because I was genuinely curious.

To become a Mensa member, your score has to be high enough to place you in the top 2%.

They don’t tell you the exact score, you’ll only know if it was high enough or not.

Well, earlier today, I got the email and bam: it seems I’m among the top 2% in terms of IQ.

There can only be two explanations:

1) I’m smart
2) everyone else is stupid

I hope it’s #1 but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s #2 either 🙂

The experience was interesting, I’m glad to be a member but at the same time, understand that IQ is not the most important thing in the world.

A lot of people are smart but don’t do anything with their lives, so again, I assure you that IQ alone isn’t enough by a long shot.

Still, if you didn’t get a chance to take the Mensa test yet, giving it a try might be worth it. Even if only as one of the things on your “to do before I die” list.

I think there are Mensa organizations in most countries, so I’m sure you’ll find more details after searching for terms such as “mensa *your country*” and taking a look at their official website.

Over here, there are several Mensa tests in different cities each year, so I’m sure you’ll be able to find a way to squeeze one of them in your schedule.

I have always wondered why the founders of this group chose a Spanish name ‘Mensa’ that means dumb, for their organization.

@James: Mensa was founded in the UK and means “table” in Latin, the founders probably chose the name to highlight the “round-table” nature of the organization and the logo reflects this as well.

On the other hand though, I have to agree with you that the Spanish version often makes more sense, as a lot of smart people (high IQ and what not) are “dumb” as in not ambitious enough to put their brain to good use.
