Not sure how many (if any) domainers are Mensa members (to be a member, you have to take their IQ test and score 130+ if I’m not mistaken). Going to one of those tests is tempting, even if only to see how I stand. As far as I understood, it’s a supervised test and therefore probably more complex/relevant than whatever tests you can take online.
As far as its utility is concerned though, I honestly have no idea what to say.
It’s probably more of an ego thing than anything else for most people.
If you are a member, it basically means you’re among the top 2% smartest people which is kind of awesome but I’m not sure what good it does aside from bragging rights 🙂
I’m not an expert at this stuff but I don’t think there’s a “one size fits all” way to “measure” how smart a person is. There are different types of intelligence and the Mensa test only measures one. Some people are good at doing well in conventional tests, other people think outside the box and so on.
For example, a lot of the world’s smartest people weren’t the types of individuals who did well in tests. They thought outside the box but if they would have taken a standardized IQ test like the Mensa one, chances are they wouldn’t have performed all that amazing.
I’d call that the Mensa paradox and would venture to say that most domainers are creative thinkers as opposed to people who do well in standardized tests.
Do I have data to back up my claims? No but it makes perfect sense.
We as domainers see things other people don’t.
We’re “wired” differently and I seriously doubt there’s a way to accurately measure that.
But a lot of us are Type A personalities, so even if the Mensa test isn’t all that relevant as far as our career is concerned, I’m sure many of us are tempted to give the test a try even if only for ego-related reasons.
I’d lie if were to say I’m not curious.
BUT
The problem however is that my time is limited and if you want to take the Mensa test seriously, I assume you have to prepare for it, probably physically as well as mentally. If you’re tired and take the test after being on holiday for 10 days and not doing anything intellectually stimulating, I’m convinced your IQ is lower than when you’re in great intellectual and physical shape.
So if you want to do this Mensa thing right, you have to invest time.
That’s a problem for me right now but in the future, even if I know IQ tests aren’t in any way relevant when it comes to my career as a domainer and entrepreneur, I’m fairly confident I’ll give it a try even if only to see what happens 🙂
