Do You Reply to Lowball Offers?

Posted on 06 April 2011 by Andrei

Some domainers consider that replying to lowball offers is a waste of time, what do you guys think? As far as I’m concerned, my gut feeling has free reign. If the lowball offer has a “clueless end user worth educating” vibe, then I copy/paste a short “domain values 101” template I put together a long time ago but on the other hand, if the email comes from let’s say “highschoolscotty1993@yahoo.com” and contains a $10 offer, replying would obviously be a waste of time.

I can confirm that turning lowball offers into sales is possible, I did it myself on more than one occasion but want to also make it clear that the domains in questions only sold for up to mid 4 figures.

In other words, I seriously doubt that turning a $50 lowball offer into a $100k+ sale is possible (I’d love to be proven wrong though, that’d be an interesting story for sure) and as a conclusion: if you’d be willing to let go of the domain in question for let’s say 4 figs, replying to lowball offers can be worth it IMO.

Don’t some of these lowballas get mad when you quote them a higher price?

I believe I have negotiated offers from the $250-$300 range up to high $xxx but I have found that responding to $50-$100 offers is not worth the time. Thus for most domains I now have fixed pricing.

Someone offered me $100 for a .co domain back in December. Eventually, we settled on $2500 for the domain. On the other hand, someone offered me $10 on a CVC.com. I replied to say that we’re expecting high $xx,xxx and he said I’d be lucky to get $25 for the domain. I try to reply to all offers, even lowball ones. The worst they can do is swear and curse at you. Then you just move on.

What do you do when you get lowball offers from those who were in the industry since 2000?

  5. Wei Says:

Funnily enough, I don’t get any offers from domainers on my domains. Usually end-users contact me directly.

@nmwando: comes with the territory 🙂

@Gnanes: if the offer is not insulting and I’m willing to sell that domain at “domainer to domainer” prices, I reply. If not, I don’t.
