I’ve been involved in quite a few online industries: domaining, affiliate marketing, hosting, services and so on. All of these have one thing in common: every once in a while, there’s a “this industry is dead” vibe that takes over.
When it comes to all of the previously mentioned industries, I’ve personally noticed such periods and guess what… none of those industries are dead. Not by a long shot.
Of course, things evolve, they always have and they always will. Adapt or gtfo!
But never make the mistake of blaming an entire industry for the fact that you’re not making as much money as you hoped you would. In most cases, you can find the culprit by looking in the mirror.
That is all 🙂

I’ve been domaining, affiliate marketing and hosting as well. My interest in the first to industries was sparked from the web hosting days. You are correct about the industry is dead vibe. The interesting thing is it sets in one a small group of people get frustrated with the current economic climate.
They feel since they aren’t doing well or aren’t doing as well as they used to be that the entire industry is under siege. I completely agree, go find something else if you are frustrated. For those that stick it out there are great rewards, but its not just something that occurs over night.

@Jason: exactly, a lot of people are basically drawing the wrong conclusions by letting their personal experience interfere with their ability to objectively determine whether or not there are enough reasons to question the fundamentals of the industry or industries they’re involved in.
