After many years of “meh… what we have is good enough”, I’m glad that people are starting to finally innovate again. New solutions such as Frank’s DomainNameSales.com impressed everyone, existing companies such as Sedo/Afternic upped their game through the MLS introduction, GoDaddy finally paid attention to what domainers wanted and the list can go on and on.
Our industry consists mainly of people who are open to innovation, the very foundation of our industry (domains as a component of the commercial Web) didn’t even exist 20 years ago and all in all, we’re as adaptable as it gets.
People will always say things like “domaining will be dead” or “Internet marketing will be dead unless you’re a huge company” and so on. As far as I’m concerned, they can just stay on the sidelines and witness first-hand just how wrong they are if that’s what they want.
My recommendation, however, would be the exact opposite.
Take action asap because 5-10 years from now, you’ll be sorry you didn’t start making things happen in 2012.

Aren’t they not the signs that domains are dying ? Else, the companies that was doing it all alone before are now thinking of joining forces. That means, their user base is decreasing.

@NetOctave: things like the parking revenue drop happen, c’est la vie but as an industry, you’re defined by how you react to such things.
If nobody would have done anything then yes, it would have been a clear sign that domains are dying. But the exact opposite happened, making me quite bullish when it comes to long-term domain values. And as everyone who knows me can confirm, it takes a lot to convince me to be bullish 🙂
