One of the world’s most popular music-related events, Eurovision, uses a dot tv domain for its official website. Quite a few companies seem to like this TLD and in my opinion, after Verisign removed the premium pricing structure back in March 2010, .tv is a very good option for domainers as well. I own several quality .tv domains, Mike Berkens owns a bunch and the list could go on and on. If you’re interested in .tv, you need to understand one thing:
It’s a NICHE TLD
In other words, not all domains represent a great fit for dot tv.
Take a look at the auctions which will end in about 5 hours on Auctionpus.com and you’ll see two .tv domains: PUA.tv and Daniel.tv.
These are examples of domains which work great with this TLD.
PUA stands for Pick Up Artist (PUA = an insanely competitive/lucrative industry, there’s a lot of money on the table because let’s face it: millions upon millions of men want to become better with women and this will never change) and it’s the most widely used pick up related term by far. PUA websites have one thing in common: they contain LOTS of videos (people giving advice, case studies and so on) and that’s exactly why .tv represents an excellent fit.
Daniel.tv is another good example because it’s probably the best possible domain you could use for let’s say a vlog if your name is Daniel. Millions of people are called Daniel and out of them:
1) at least a few thousand are interested in launching vlogs or video-related sites
2) at least a few thousand are local celebrities
3) at least a few hundred are worldwide celebrities
etc.
These are just two examples of domains for which .tv represents an excellent choice. The same thing goes for domains like Documentaries.tv, News.tv and so on.
On the other hand, domains like MortgageRefinancing.tv or UtahLawyers.tv, which would be worth a lot of money as dot coms, are not worth all that much as dot tv domains because they are not media/tv/video-oriented.
All in all: .tv is a niche extension, acknowledge this fact and you can make a lot of money by investing in this TLD.
Makes sense?

You don’t need a .TV domain to put video on a website but a .TV domain can communicate to potential visitors what to expect on a website – a visually-oriented experience. On the other hand, sometimes developers will use a .TV domain to obtain the keywords they want at a fraction of the cost of the equivalent .COM even though the site isn’t necessarily mega streaming video. At $25/yr for renewals, domainers do need to be rather strict with acquisitions however.

@Leonard: I agree with the first part of your post (as an example, PUA.com is a six figure domain, whereas PUA.tv can be bought for only mid 4 figs right now over at https://auctionpus.com and given the fact that PUA websites are highly video-oriented, going with the .tv at a fraction of the dot com’s cost makes sense in this case) but as far as the second part is concerned, I’d recommend only investing in domains which go well with the media/video/tv-theme of this TLD.
My advice for domainers who are interested in .tv domains would be this: only invest in domains which represent great choices for this TLD (niches where videos are used a lot like the PUA one I referred to previously, first names, city/state/country names and so on).
As far as renewals are concerned, I’d recommend not waiting until the last minute. A lot of times, you can obtain significantly better prices by transferring your domains to another company or simply by negotiating with your current registrar. If you own a lot of domains, it adds up.
