DNForum Drama – 100% Lame

Posted on 28 November 2009 by Andrei

It all started with a DomainGang post about Adam Dicker’s “decision” to shut down DNForum (obviously a joke, the post even ended with a “dummy disclaimer”). Come on, why would someone take a DomainGang post seriously?WTF? Here’s what happened:

1) Tia Wood posted about Adam Dicker’s “intention” of shutting down DNForum (again, the post was a joke – not a brilliant one but still, it was obviously a joke – and again, it even ended with a “dummy disclaimer”)

2) A few people actually took the post seriously (for the third time, leaving the fact that pretty much all DomainGang posts are jokes aside: the post ended with a disclaimer!) and Adam Dicker started a thread about it -> LAME

3) People started to go all “Oh noes! DomainGang’s attitude is inexcusable! The HORROR!” -> LAME (please, do us all a favor and stop taking the Internet seriously)

4) The post ended up being removed -> LAME (removing a post simply because a few people got their panties in a knot is just as lame as being pissed off after reading something which was obviously a joke IMO)

5) Acro posted a “public apology” -> LAME (seriously, what did you apologize for? The fact that a few people didn’t read a disclaimer and took a post which was obviously a joke seriously?)

The whole situation is so lame that it’s not even funny. Why did I post about it? Because it paints an extremely clear picture when it comes to domaining forums:

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much noise
  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much drama
  • a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too “all sunshine and butterflies” perspective on an industry which ( just like the Internet in general) is extremely shady

In case you haven’t read the DomainGang post I’m referring to, you check it out via Google cache. Perform a search for the term “domaingang dnforum shutting down” (the “notorious” blog post will appear as the first result) and click on the “cached” link 😉

I remember seeing a link to the post on domaining.com. I got the joke as soon as I read the title and saw that it was from domaingang.com. Dnforum overreacted big-time, domaingang.com shouldn’t have taken down the post.

  2. Shane Says:

I have to admit that when I read the headlines on domaining I double clutch every time I read domaingang. I love satire but unlike the onion that tends to be general satire, DG tends to use actual names and people. It does get confusing but I do get and like the stories, I’m just not sure everyone does. It’s a bit insider oriented. I think it will be Tia’s last story on DG and I think it will be something we can all look back and laugh about. It IS good publicity.

  3. Troy Says:

I don’t ever read DomainGang.com, I think their posts are pretty dumb for the most part but still I don’t think what they did was that big of a deal at all. They should have not even apologized, they are a satire site and they included a disclaimer.

  4. Michael Says:

Great post. Adam needs to get a sense of humor, the people who believed it and emailed him need to unplug their internet, Theo needs to grow a pair, and forum trolls need to chill with the drama.

  5. David J Castello Says:

DomainGang.com is always funny and sometimes can be downright brilliant. How anyone with an IQ over 65 could not immediately see that the DNForum post was 100% satire needs to run to the nearest pharmacy and buy the strongest laxative they can find.

  6. Sammy Ashouri Says:

You mean something written on a satirical blog wasn’t true? OH NO! THE HORROR!

  7. Helder Says:

This is getting ridiculous, people making a drama of a clear joke. I’m really starting to think that a lot of domainers need to get a LIFE, and they also need to get out of no smile, no jokes, no kidding, only very serious domainland.

I agree that they shouldn’t have taken the post, since it had a disclaimer, and they didn’t hurt anyone.

  8. Trevar Says:

Excellent post, complete over reaction. Still, shame to see the forum closed down. 🙂

  9. Acro Says:

As an afterthought, I think I should have gotten in touch with Adam Dicker and *arrange* for this ordeal as a free advertising to DNForum and DomainGang.

But seriously, the jest of it is as follows: I was on vacation, Tia wrote a post that had I been around would not have been published in this format and Adam freaked out, starting a thread. While I was still away on my trip, Tia decided to disclose her role as a writer with DomainGang and therefore explained that she had written that article. She then proceeded to remove the article. I never asked her to, Adam never asked her to but she did the right thing to remove it, because it was rather fringe in its impact. The idea for DomainGang is to provide entertainment and laughs, not to simply offer shocking headlines with ‘fake’ news. That’s not what we do.

Now, everyone and their mother has an opinion about this that and the other thing. I don’t care if some don’t like the fact that DomainGang exists, or that don’t care for our style, humor or whatever. Actually, the only person that systematically bitches about seeing our headlines in Domaining.com is a loser from the area of Edmonton, Canada, posting under various aliases.

Happy holidays to all, DomainGang is here to stay and there will be some major news pretty soon.

I haven’t read the post but I would be fn pissed off enough where id be confrontational to find out if its a hidden agenda, or just stupid shit where the consequences were not foreseen. He has a subscriber based biz on that site. He needs people to feel secure dnforums going to be around for a long time, especially with selling their lifetime memberships. even the people that realize its a joke afterwards, will unconsciously be affected. Propaganda is a Bit#$ !

  11. Andrei Says:

@Acro: if you don’t care what a few DNForum members think about DomainGang, why didn’t you bust their balls by reinstating the post after Tia took it down (it’s available via Google cache, so if you change your mind… 😉 )?

Sorry man but what you did was lame. You should have simply posted something along the lines of “if you don’t like the site, gtfo” and most importantly, you should have helped Tia out by responding to the people who had their pitchforks and torches ready (you know… leadership 101). Instead, you apologized (an apology which, just like most of the DNForum posts, made Tia “look bad”): come on Acro, WTF?

  12. Acro Says:

Andrei – aka domaintips – I don’t know which rock you popped from under, therefore enjoy your 15 minutes of ‘fame’ by riding on the DomainGang/DNF hoopla. Seek scandals at the Walmart periodicals. Telling me what I should have done or should not have done shows how immature some people in this industry have become after throwing together a blog and getting an attitude.

  13. 2D 3D Animation India Says:

I have never visited DomainGang,, but for sure after reading your post i will see them at least once,, just to check how dumb they are 😉

  14. Andrei Says:

@Acro: you acted like a pussy and I told you that you acted like a pussy. If you think that my post represents a personal attack, you’re an idiot.

I guess I need to repeat this for all of the asshats who take the Internet too seriously: I criticize actions, not people (we’ve never met, so I have no idea what you’re like as a person). If you have a problem with that, don’t read my blog. Oh and man the fuck up… is that mature enough?

  15. Teknoloji haberleri Says:

    Excellent post, complete over reaction.

  16. t Says:

Domains make me emotional 🙂 Domaingang has a nice writing style, they should start another website with serious insight and news on the industry. Id bet it’d be popular.
