Don’t Forget to Follow Up!

Posted on 15 January 2013 by Andrei

I’m pretty sure most domainers underestimate the importance of following up, hope this post represents a good reminder. Let’s assume End User 1 made an offer for DomainABC.com 9 months ago but you declined it and he wouldn’t budge, let’s also assume that End User 2 made an offer for the same domain 3 months ago and that End User 3 made an offer you’re tempted to accept a few days ago, after a back-and-forth negotiation.

Is Hard Work a Good Investment?

Posted on 14 January 2013 by Andrei

Whenever you work on something, you’re basically investing time and energy. When you invest money, you always analyze the potential ROI, so why not do the same thing when investing time/energy? I’ll start by answering the question I asked in the title and the answer is “yes or no” 🙂

Hard work can be a good investment but if you take things to the extreme, it might end up being a bad one, let me explain why.

There Will Be More and More Domainers

Posted on 13 January 2013 by Andrei

One of the most obvious positive aspects associated with new gTLDs is exactly this: there will be more and more domainers, there will be a “gold rush” vibe that anyone who has been around for a while is familiar with. For our industry, that’s definitely a positive thing, no matter what your opinion about new gTLDs may be. The more attention domaining receives, the better.

I, For One, Welcome Our New gTLD Overlords!

Posted on 07 January 2013 by Andrei

As a blogger, the situation is obvious to say the least: there aren’t that many established domaining blogs (btw, DomainingTips.com will be 5 years old on the 31st of January, I’ll write a separate post about the anniversary later this month) and there will be lots of potential advertisers.

Don’t Be Bitter… Just Don’t!

Posted on 23 December 2012 by Andrei

In our industry, there are unfortunately many people who develop a “they were lucky enough to be here x years ago” way of thinking which is destructive to say the least. Look, you can’t control the past and instead of losing sleep over things you cannot control, why not focus on the present?

Be Polite… Even to Assholes

Posted on 22 December 2012 by Andrei

When having an offline face-to-face conversation, you’re less likely to deal with assholes than on the Internet, simply because the anonymity factor associated with the Internet tends to sometimes make the worst in people surface. The Web has a *lot* of advantages but there are also disadvantages that have to be acknowledged, c’est la vie.

Great Domain = Instant Credibility

Posted on 16 December 2012 by Andrei

Having a great domain helps from a lot of perspectives but the “instant credibility” factor is often overlooked. Let’s assume you own a one word dot com domain that doesn’t have all that much traffic/rev and that the term doesn’t have a lot of exact match searches either. Or a LLL dot com, you get the point.

Contacting Domainers vs. Being Contacted by Domainers

Posted on 10 December 2012 by Andrei

… nope, it’s not the same thing. When you’re contacting domainers to buy one or more of their domains, you’re automatically in a position that’s considerably more complicated than when you’re being contacted by a domainer who wants to sell something or when a domain is being sold publicly.

Quick Friday Tip: Implement a Renewal Strategy

Posted on 07 December 2012 by Andrei

The domain renewal process is and always will be one of the most important parts of your business model, yet most people simply go with the flow and renew domains “whenever”… not a good idea. In the long run, you’ll end up losing quite a bit of money if you don’t put together a renewal strategy. Ok, if you only own a couple of domains, it’s not that much of a big deal.

How Soon Should You Reply?

Posted on 05 December 2012 by Andrei

If an end user contacts you and you reply right away, I think it’s a bit of a mistake. Appearing too eager to sell is not exactly a good idea. I understand that it’s tempting to reply right away but I’d recommend resisting the temptation.
