Two days ago, I’ve explained why you should always dig deeper rather than draw quick conclusions based on new gTLD stats. To a lesser degree, this is also true for dot coms.

I was going through statistics over at nTLDStats.com and noticed that Dot Theatre only had 149 registrations. My first instinct was “wow, it has over 18 times less regs than Dot Horse!” (I’d say that in the world of new gTLDs, you know you’ve hit rock bottom if you have less registrations than Dot Horse) but I then went to 101Domain to see how much a .theatre domain costs and noticed it’s $699.99.
All of a sudden the TLD no longer seems like such a financial failure.

Edited: as Rick mentioned on twitter, he didn’t max out his cc, simply spent $1.8k on 18 names that he made back via domain revenue. My bad, sorry guys 🙂
The idea of borrowing money to buy domains has been around since pretty much the beginning of domaining.
Most of you have probably read stories about legendary domainers such as Rick Schwartz (edited: Rick wasn’t the best example, see above) who maxed out their credit cards to invest in then-unproven assets, people who ultimately became millionaires. So… should you do the same?

The quick answer? $0. For a more complex one, keep reading.
According to Konstantinos, roughly $90k in sales were generated, with the top sales being Fashion.NYC at $37,000 and Shop.NYC at $33,500.

I’ve written about LLLL.coms yesterday and since there’s been quite a bit of interest in LLLs over the past 24 hours after a ~10k CHIP LLL price drop (blog as well as forum discussions), I think it’s time to discuss LLL.coms from an end user perspective.

LLLL.com prices have skyrocketed from late 2015 to early 2016, then fell as of that point and have pretty much stagnated since. The price drop was dramatic but still, prices are *considerably* higher now than they were prior to the surge in Chinese interest.

In his “Outliers” book, Malcolm Gladwell says it takes roughly 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in your field. Now sure, I’m not saying we should agree with his 10,000 figure 100% but it is fairly obvious that no matter what it is you do for a living, it takes a LOT of practice to become an expert. A LOT!

Beginners love writing numbers on a piece of paper and calling it a plan, I was guilty of the exact same thing. Making plans about how you’ll buy x domains, then “easily” (oh, how I’ve misused that word over the years!) sell y% each year at an average price of $z and watch that sweet, sweet money come rolling in.

Quite frankly, I’m sick and tired of arguments such as “yeah, but there are gazillions of huge unreported sales” whenever someone points out that sales of a certain asset class have been weak.
We’ve seen it with dot mobi (although I’ve never dabbled in dot mobis), we’ve seen it with dot TV (I’ve invested in .tv here and there), we’ve seen it with certain types of dot coms as well (future trend domains or other “flavor of the month” investments, not my cup of tea) and of course, we’re seeing it with new gTLDs as well (I’ve invested here and there at the very beginning, zero interest at this point).

I was reading a post Raymond has written earlier today and snoopy made an interesting/valid remark: that 99% of businesses spend 10 bucks on a domain.
