Bloggers Make Considerably Less Than People Think

Posted on 19 November 2015 by Andrei

… at least if we’re talking about direct revenue from blogging.

Yesterday, I posted about the fact that I’m looking for guest bloggers (one of them will publish his introductory article soon and tell us a thing or two about what he did right/wrong, all that good stuff) and one of my readers asked me why I’m not paying for articles.

It’s a fair enough question and the answer is simple: blogging for isn’t about generating direct revenue.

I’ve been running DomainingTips for about 8 years and let me just tell you this much: the direct ad revenue is nothing worth writing home about.

If direct revenue were my only metric, I would have quit blogging a looooooooooong time ago but here I am.

Why?

Because blogging is worth it for other reasons.

Mainly for the doors it opens, for the opportunities it gives you access to. The direct revenue you make from blogging, at least based on my experience, pales in comparison.

You get to meet new people.

You get to create an online persona and have a voice.

You receive feedback from others, sometimes positive and sometimes negative.

You receive exposure for your projects.

… the list could go on and on.

That’s what blogging is all about in most cases.

Now I’m not saying there aren’t examples of people who make a killing via direct revenue. I’m sure there are but what I’m trying to explain is that they’re a minority. Therefore, I feel comfortable giving this piece of advice: if you’re thinking about becoming a blogger for the direct revenue you’ll generate, look elsewhere.

Blogging has to fit in somewhere in the big picture, it has to be a piece of the puzzle and not the entire puzzle.

Rant over 🙂

    It’s a labor of love!

Especially for those that focus on a ‘small’ country code extension. lol

But you have to pay Domaining.com $1200 monthly for you to be able to blog, right? So yo are telling me you are emptying your own pocket to blog?? Not making money is one thing, losing/wasting money is a different

I agree with everything you wrote. I have no ads at all on my blog (http://www.impulsecorp.com), because it is not worth the small amount of money it would generate (maybe $10/month?). I do it for all the reasons you listed in your posting.

I think it would be better to have title of this post as “Bloggers in Domaining Make Considerably Less Than People Think”
