Why Do Some Domainers Burn Bridges?

Posted on 08 November 2010 by Andrei

I’ve noticed quite a few posts/threads on domaining forums where people brag about how they “taught that cheapskate end user a lesson” through a rude reply after the person in question made an offer the seller considered too low. I want to make one thing perfectly clear: if we want to be taken seriously as an industry, some of us need to grow up!

What Happened to Long-Term Thinking?

Someone took the time to contact you directly.
The person in question obviously understands that domains can help his/her business.
Even more so, the person in question is willing to PAY for a domain.
You’re a domainer who owns quite a few domains.
You like money.
You probably already own or will end up owning other domains that the end user in question might find interesting.

… so why on Earth would you burn this bridge through a rude reply?

Poor Baby, Did That Mean “Lowballer” Hurt Your Feelings?

Ok, so someone only offered 1k for one of your best domains? Why burn that bridge instead of offering a relevant but lower quality domain from your portfolio instead? Or why not politely say no like an adult, keep that person’s email address in your database and contact him or her when/if you end up owning a domain related to his or her industry which you would be willing to sell for an amount similar to that person’s highest offer for the initial domain?

There are a handful of domainers (literally) who receive multiple offers each and every day and yes, being extremely selective might make sense in their case but as far as most domain investors are concerned, burning bridges is just plain stupid.

Good write up – straight to the point. It is extemely important for people to be polite when replying back to potential offers. They are the ones with money – you are the one trying to sell a domain. If you dont like their offer, tell them no, or tell them what you can sell it for. Plain and simple. No one likes an a**hole.

Yes, there is a fine line between seeking a target sales price for a domain name and being a #$%^&@! Unless you have buyers extending offers every couple hours, who do you think you are going to sell to?

Great posts… I make low ball offers on EVERYTHING I buy… whether it’s a used video camera or antique furniture. I make a low offer out of habit — all in an effort to get a great deal. In many cases, I don’t mind paying the full asking price, but if I can get it for less by simply asking, then I try.

Mouthing off at me ensures you don’t get my money at all, but a friendly response or counter-offer generally is enough to make me pursue the offer… Not all the time, but in several cases, I did buy and pay full price — because I really wanted it 🙂

I always try and be friendly because you never know when you might want to go back to an offer when you are really in need and a 1k offer can always turn into something more.

I feel like I don’t want to burn bridges but I am tired of the fact I know she continues to be hot and cold… and to hang out with someone who did those things with your man and not knowing if she did it once she would do it again.

I made my way over to the well. I’d never been allowed to play anywhere near this when I was younger, but once I was 15, they got me to haul the water out everyday. It was a comfortable feeling to be filling up the buckets again.

Since there isn’t really a realistic tool to refer to for pricing a site and the huge number of sites that apparently appraise a website value, I think it might actually be confusing for some people new to the industry that are looking to buy a site.

You could definitely see your enthusiasm in the paintings you write. The arena hopes for more passionate writers such as you who are not afraid to mention how they believe. At all times follow your heart. sarcoidosis
