My #1 Long-Term Goal: Owning Businesses That Run Themselves

Posted on 01 November 2011 by Andrei

Everyone knows that I run quite a few businesses but at this point, what I don’t like is that they depend way too much on me. Sure, I love investing time in my projects but that doesn’t change the fact that at a certain point, you as the owner need to limit yourself to making important decisions and that’s it.

You know, vision vs. execution and all that good stuff.

As a result, my long-term goal should be obvious: owning businesses that run themselves. And if you’re reading this, I’d encourage you to choose a similar long-term goal.

On a slightly different note, I’ll refer to the domaining industry for a moment. Now as a domainer, you’re in a great position to work on achieving such a goal. Rick Schwartz is on the right track with his partnership concept in my opinion.

Maybe someone wants your domain but can’t afford a “100% cash” deal. No problem, then what about a “cash + ownership” arrangement?

The Web is still in its infancy and even though the economy is in pretty bad shape, industries such as ours are on an unstoppable long-term upward spiral. Let’s make some money!

  2. HOWmuch Says:

How much do you suggest asking?

  3. Andrei Says:

@HOWmuch: there’s no “one size fits all” answer to your question, there are waaaaaaaay too many variables involved.

What would your asking price be if another buyer wanted a “100% cash” deal?

How much can the actual buyer afford to pay upfront?

… the list could go on and on :)

  4. Xdreamer Says:

Would be nice but hard, how can you avoid scams by your staff if you give them logins to everything?

  5. Andrei Says:

@Xdreamer: unfortunately, risk is always a variable which needs to be taken into consideration. At this point, I make decisions based on a reason + gut feeling combination. If you’re just starting out though, I’d advise against trusting your gut feeling :)

This is a little bit off-topic but still about XML-RPC, I was wondering.. if you have that as default… why is it that Google and the other search engines will rank that page? I’ve seen this way too many times.

  7. Web Hosting Says:

limit yourself is required when you are doing so many businesses. Other wise things can go wrong..

  8. Xdreamer Says:

I know what you mean Andrei by risk and I agree

maybe without risk it would not be fun to do business anyway
