I’m not from the US and therefore, I think I’m in a reasonably good position to explain why international investors like short domains. In my case, as I hope you guys will agree, the language barrier thing is not much of a problem. Even though I’m not a native English speaker, my English is not bad at all.
But for a lot of international investors, the language barrier issue is a huge problem.
Let me explain.
I keep in touch with lots of international domain buyers and every now and then, they ask me what I think about one of the domains they’ve bought or are thinking about buying.
The interesting pattern I’ve noticed is that frequently, they like phrases/term constructed in a way that makes sense in their own language but in English… not so much.
Therefore, in their case, choosing a good domain is tricky even if only for this reason.
Short domains eliminate this problem.
When it comes to short domains, the language barrier disappears and international investors no longer have a competitive disadvantage.
And given the fact that they’re also highly liquid, it’s a no-brainer for an international investor who wants to play it safe.
Good letters, so-so letters, past sales, you name it.
Everyone has access to this information and there you have it, we’re dealing with a situation where the language barrier issue stops becoming a competitive disadvantage.
To understand why international investors prefer certain types of domains, you just have to see things from their perspective, that’s really all there is to it.

Short number or letter combinations will always be in demand because yes they are easy to remember.
I have noticed more offers on my idn.com names this year than ever before. Traffic and ppc has increased as well. Now that people can type in their native language idn.com names seem to be getting more attention.
Why not surf and type in your native language? Forcing people to surf in English or remember some number combination was/is a stop gap measure imo. As more and more sites are developed on idn.com names awareness will increase as well.
Cheers.
