As I mentioned yesterday, being involved in an industry that didn’t even exist 20 years ago is a privilege. To take things even further, I constantly refer to the “dog years” analogy when talking about the Internet with people who earn a living offline.
Our “world” is *much* more dynamic than its offline counterpart, so I’d say a 7 year multiple like with dog years is reasonable enough.
If you don’t believe me, think about a few local offline businesses that have been around for 10+ years and are still relevant.
I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to compile a decent list.
Then, compile a list of huge national or international businesses that have been around for 10+ years and are still relevant.
Compiling such a list will be even easier.
Now compile a list of online businesses that have been around for 10+ years and are still relevant.
Let’s just say compiling this one will be a bit harder 🙂
Staying relevant is hard in the offline world as well, don’t get me wrong, but it’s exponentially harder online.
So from now on, when people ask how much experience you have with this Internet thingy, multiply the # of years by 7 and you’ll be closer to an accurate estimate!
