… and for domainers from other countries who get paid in dollars and who are seeing their local currency fall against the USD.
I’ve “complained” about the fact that a strong Euro sucks for European domainers on more than one occasion and am very pleased by the fact that over the past few months, the Dollar has become quite a bit stronger compared to the Euro.
Right now, one Euro is worth less than 1.1 USD, which is remarkable in light of the fact that at a certain point, some people were actually expecting the Euro to surpass 2 USD.
Why is a strong dollar good for European domainers?
Well, think about it.
For the most part, domainers get paid in dollars.
They then use said dollars to buy “stuff” in their own country.
To do that, they have to exchange dollars for their local currency.
The stronger their currency gets compared to the dollar, the more their purchasing power is eroded (the less stuff they can buy). The weaker their currency gets, the more things their dollars buy.
For a loooooooooooooong time, European domainers have been frustrated by the fact that the Euro was too strong compared to the dollar. I’m happy to say that right now, we have reasons to celebrate… a long overdue celebration, I might add 🙂

Agreed if you are a seller.. But as a buyer with EUR currency in your account it sucks. 2008 you needed 65000€ to buy a 100.000$ name. Now you need 92000€.

Great for Canadians who can sell their domains in US dollars, you get about a 33% premium in C$.

The problem is that few European registrars are good for domain investors and they are too much stupid and lazy to take advantage of the current $ appreciation and “steal” customers to US registrars…(i.e. European domainers will continue to use US registrars…).
What a fucking situation we have here in Europe:
1) registrars that are technologically surpassed
2) no marketplace for European buyers who want to search domains by language
3) incredibly higher taxation compared to US domainers, at least for most of the European countries
4) no regulated escrow service
….
Solving these problems would bring the entire domain investing industry in Europe at a completly different level.

Exactly! I believe dollar value is the biggest bubble the world have ever seen, but I like it high because domaining is my main job and I am paid in dollars. I mentioned many times exactly what you posted in your article. All who are true domainers (buy low sell high) should be happy and not worry because they have to pay some domains more than before as they get much more back! 🙂
