Merry Christmas… and Nerves of Steel!

Posted on 25 December 2018 by Andrei

First and foremost, I’d like to wish everyone who’s celebrating right now a Merry Christmas and if you’re not, then I just hope you have a great winter and an excellent 2019!

Although, when it comes to the latter, let’s just say it’s wise to be optimistic but prudent, especially given our current context:

  1. Endogenous weakness, or to put it differently, weakness in the reseller market brought about by many factors, including but not limited to cyclical behavior, the failure of new gTLDs as investment grade assets (the only thing we care about here, whether or not investing in them is worth it), the late 2015 to early 2016 short domain craziness coming to an end and the subsequent bear market for this category and so on
  2. An ever-increasing likelihood of disturbances as a result of exogenous shocks, with the current weakness exhibited by stock markets giving quite a few investors jitters. Since domains are “risk-on” assets which perform well when people are optimistic, a financial crisis would make the lives of investors even more difficult

However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t money to be made by those who have hustle in them!

Success stories most definitely exist, end user sales are always a wild card, with even one blockbuster end user success story potentially turning a mediocre year into the best year you’ve ever had, the list of reasons to be optimistic is quite robust if you have the right attitude.

Even in the event of a brutal economic crisis, ambitious domainers and/or entrepreneurs can find ways to make money when everyone else is afraid and re-invest in assets that will be available at firesale prices.

Don’t run for the hills, think outside the box and 2019 might turn out to be surprisingly good for you! 🙂
