Who Would Have the Most to Lose If a New gTLD “Goes Dark”

Posted on 04 December 2015 by Andrei

… except for the registry, of course 🙂

Frank Schilling posted an honest + interesting comment on to a DomainIncite post and in my opinion, domainers need to realize that yes, a *lot* of new gTLDS will fail. A lot.

Now, obviously, the registry would be the biggest loser.

And not just when it comes to the string that failed. Let’s assume a registry owns 50 strings and one of them goes dark. What do you think will happen when it comes to the remaining 49? Do you think people will continue regging and renewing? I highly doubt that. Once the precedent has been set, the registry in question will suffer a huge reputation hit and a lot of people will obviously stay away, advise others to stay away and so on.

Which is why I’m sure registries will do everything in their power to avoid such outcomes but I don’t think they’ll be able to, the numbers just won’t make any sense in a lot of cases.

So, who will have the most to lose aside from registries?

You’d be tempted to say “website owners” but quite frankly, they’ll be given ample time to change to a new URL. Will it be unpleasant? Yes. Will they be the biggest losers? Nope.

The biggest losers will be, you’ve probably guessed it by now, domainers because nobody will reimburse them for their loss. If a new gTLD goes under, domainers will lose everything. To us, it’s not just an inconvenience, it’s a 100% loss.

Just something worth thinking about…

Good enough reason to stop registering and renewing oddball gTLDs.

It’s a total mess, created for greedy reasons.

While I think it might be possible that “a lot” of registries will fail, this is not the same as saying the gTLDs will fail. There are a number of protections in place to prevent the very undermining of trust you are speaking of. Just like when any business fails, it impacts the customer’s ability to trust in their services. The registry business is no different.

    Thanks for the thoughts!

    I think you’re wrong.

Let’s assume Verisign sees the other registries closing down strings, and let’s assume they “own” the TLD .com (rather than just being a contractor operating it). Now, let’s say they decide to shut down .cc because it’s not as profitable and they can spend the same resources/$ on growing .net. Would that cause you to not renew your .com or .net domains?

    Me neither.

Plus, people have short attention spans. I think many would gladly work with Toby or Dicker if they came back into the industry. Right or wrong.

Then, add in the fact that most people have no idea who runs the TLD and what other TLDs they have. It’s confusing for most people.

So, no, it won’t make any difference, imo.

Frank Schilling is an extraordinary Carpetbagging Huckster !
Frank is a master at taking your money and convincing you that the loss was your fault. He has the little unsuspecting Newbie Domainers thinking he is a champion of the little guy. He portrays himself as a friend to small-time investors even as he picks their pockets clean. Beware the New GTLD scam, soon to be exposed. Frank cannot escape the coming realities that will effect his GTLDs. Just a friendly Warning JAS 12/4/15

    @ Tom Drever

When it comes to money people never forget, I for one would never work with Dicket or T Clements, Dicker tried to add me on linkedin before, I ignored that request.

This is not rocket science, these people are self appointed guru’s

The Google-Centric Ad companies are supporting the new GTLDs as the superior Marketing Strategy. This obsolesced Google-Centric strategy will sink many new Net denizens new launch aspirations. The mere fact that the New GTLD operators have this cavalier attitude that fragile new Online business’s should not be alarmed if their businesses should go dark by using New GTLDS with just a shallow response such as (Trust Us its a minor issue )??
The Brand Damage this would cause is not minor but a major Online Marketing Strategy Misfire that can be wisely avoided by using an already established extension (Prefferably the Dominant Branded .COM Extension, whose credibility can add UniversaL Platform acceptability Standards along with employing a subdomain that incorporates the new GTLDs characteristics. This is what a really smart Marketing Strategist would choose.
