Yesterday, I explained that while great LLLL dot coms such as CVCVs are doing remarkably well, domainers should stay away from the lowest quality LLLLs (also known as “wholesale” LLLL dot coms) such as YQXZ.com.
Two readers disagreed and posted a few high value wholesale LLLL sales as an argument in favor of the fact that LLLL dot coms are in fact worth it.
At first sight, what they’re saying makes sense but after analyzing things more thoroughly, you have to ask yourself:
How many LLLL.com domains are there?
The answer is 456,976.
In other words, 26x26x26x26.
So almost half a million domains.
One sale out of half a million represents 0.000002%.
Let’s assume half of all LLLL dot coms can be considered low quality LLLLs. In that case, one sale represents $0.000004%.
Here’s what I did:
I visited Namebio.com, went through *all* reported LLLL dot com sales over $5,000 and picked the ones which can be considered low quality.
For the sake of our experiment, I defined a low quality LLLL domain as a LLLL dot com which has 2 or more bad letters and doesn’t have any other particularity that makes it valuable (for example, Y is considered a low quality letter but YYYY.com is a very valuable domain because a 4x repeating letter makes the domain worth a lot of money).
So again, I defined a low quality LLLL as a domain with 2 or more bad letters and without particularities such as the one I referred to previously.
After going through all sales, I found 15 $5k+ sales of LLLL.coms containing 2 bad letters, 6 $5k+ sales of LLLL.coms containing 3 bad letters and *no* $5k+ sales of LLLL.coms containing 4 low quality letters.
So all in all, out of all low quality LLLL dot coms (about half of the total number of LLLL dot coms for the sake of our example, so roughly 250,000), I was only able to find:
1) 15 sales in the $5k+ range for LLLL dot coms with 2 bad letters
2) 6 sales in the $5k+ range for LLLL dot coms with 3 bad letters
3) no sales in the $5k+ range for LLLL dot coms with 4 bad letters
In other words, only 21 sales in the $5k+ range for LLLL dot coms with 2 or more low quality letters.
Since one sale represents 0.000004%, 21 sales represent 0.000084%
Yes, only 0.000084% out of all low quality LLLL.coms sold for $5k+.
Now my research wasn’t perfect by any means, I approximated several times and might have missed a few sales but I’m sure I managed to get my point across: the arguments in favor of investing in low quality LLLL dot coms are just not there.
Maybe the real number of low quality LLLL.com sales is 5 times higher.
Maybe 10.
Maybe even 100.
We’d still be talking about an extremely low percentage and that’s the main point I tried to get across through this post.
If since the beginning of the Web, only 0.000084% of all low quality LLLL.coms sold for $5k+, I think it’s reasonably safe to say that staying away would be the best approach.
