Google’s Response to Facebook’s “Like” Button

Posted on 30 March 2011 by Andrei

Something extremely important is happening right now and as a person who earns a living online (domainer/webmaster/whatever), it’s in your best interest to stay on top of things: Google has launched “+1”, a feature similar to the FB “Like” button which is currently available for search results/AdWords listings and will soon be available for websites.

I don’t have time to explain what just happened (things are crazy around here today) and it’d be pointless anyway since Danny Sullivan from SearchEngineLand.com wrote a great review, so I’ll simply link you to this article which covers everything from A to Z.

Cliff notes:

1) “+1” is basically Google’s “Like” button
2) currently available for search results and AdWords listings
3) will be available for websites soon

Btw, the launch of +1 isn’t important because it’ll somehow be some kind of a game changer or smashing hit. To be perfectly honest, this project will probably be a flop, just like Google’s other social media applications. What’s important is understanding WHY Google is doing this and whether or not +1 will have an impact on our industry. I’ll write a detailed post about these 2 aspects tomorrow.

I can’t see that feature yet.

    Thanks for sharing.

@Juan: I think they will gradually make it available to everyone (they usually choose this approach whenever a new feature is launched), be sure to check out the SearchEngineLand article I’ve linked to if you’d like to analyze some screenshots.

This design is steller! You most certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

The root of your writing while appearing reasonable in the beginning, did not settle well with me after some time. Someplace within the paragraphs you were able to make me a believer but just for a very short while. I however have got a problem with your jumps in assumptions and one would do well to fill in those breaks. In the event you can accomplish that, I would surely end up being fascinated.
