Dot XYZ = The Next Dot IO?

Posted on 12 August 2015 by Andrei

Ironically, just two weeks after I asked you guys what you thought about the domain Stocks.XYZ, an announcement took the domain industry by storm: the fact that Google has purchased and will be using ABC.XYZ. I’m a pragmatic guy and as such, am not quick to jump to conclusions such as “wow, the average Joe will start registering lots and lots of new gTLDs and Dot XYZ in particular”… it takes way more than this for us to get anywhere near that point.

Startups however may very well end up embracing Dot XYZ.

Therefore, I think this event may very well end up turning Dot XYZ into the next Dot IO. What this means is that Shane might end up being right, he mentioned a while ago that he considers .XYZ domains interesting investments. In my opinion, what should make an extension successful in the eyes of a domainer shouldn’t be the overall number of domains in existence but rather the answer to one simple question: is the extension hot enough for investments to generate a good return?

The answer to that question, as far as Dot IO is concerned ended up being positive as long as you focused on buying the best of the best domains.

From this perspective, the Dot IO comparison is quite flattering.

As the owner of Stocks.XYZ, I genuinely hope the extension will end up becoming as hot as Dot IO.

Today’s event convinced me to hang on to the domain, will be interesting to observe what happens next. If I receive at an offer of mid 4 figs or above, I’ll sell. If not, I’ll keep the domain and see what the future holds.

An anecdote I want to mention before ending the post is this: I live in a random country from Eastern Europe and the culmination of all this was seeing a photo of Daniel Nagari, the person behind the XYZ registry, in a local newspaper. The person who wrote the article in question dedicated more than half of the article real estate to the event we are just talking about, the fact that Google decided to purchase a domain in the .XYZ at extension. Half of the article was dedicated to things about Alphabet and the other half strictly to the XYZ extension. Dot XYZ is receiving massive worldwide coverage at this point. Crazy.

In my opinion, the ABC.XYZ situation will definitely have a positive impact on Dot XYZ. Not as far as mass end user adoption is concerned (because again, it takes way more than something like this to convince the average Internet user to start registering .XYZ domains) but rather when it comes to startup scene adoption.

    No. XYZ is still junk.

There are some good New gTLDs out there specially when you can bring toghether left+right (Travel+Agency=Travel.Agency) but .XYZ is the worst extension launched as it doesn´t fit with any keyword. Maybe ABC.xyz was the only domain with sense. Negari is not a businessman, is just a crazy child playing as businessman. They still give away .XYZ domain names and when they sell them the average price is between $1 & $5. There is no future for such business plan. Clever people will invest in good new gTLDs but definitely that´s not .XYZ I own over 500 new gTLDs but 0 XYZ

what I think most people are missing is that this is really good for domain hacks. The fact that Google is using abc.xyz instead of alphabet.com or alphabet.io is a big deal. Domain hacks are valuable regardless of the TLD.

I think the argument against domain hacks before was that sometimes it did not include the keyword/search term in the domain name, but if Google is using a domain hack, it must not be important, because if anyone knows what they are doing in regards to SEO, it is Google.

sounds like google prefers to hang out in a far corner of the internet. Seems like the perfect spot for their think tank to be. However, what works for Google certainly may not work for other business. They don’t have to promote themselves and probably aren’t worried about people having to find them.

I think all the commenters above were spot on with their comments. ABC.XYZ is one of the very few scenarios that works with that extension. The sad thing is that people will dive into this extension with high hopes and end up on the losing end because it is definitely one of the worst non-sensical extentions out there, but you have to give it to Negari he is a good marketer and knows exactly where to market his cure all river water elixir

Whether .COM or any other TLD, if your portfolio generates positive passive cash flow (no intensive outbound marketing or capital and labor intensive development), you are doing something right. If portfolio renewals exceed sales/parking income, you need to make some adjustments. Assuming that a market will develop five years from now and you are going to keep on throwing money away till then is not a great idea. It might take twenty-five years.

What makes beachfront property so valuable? Every property in the vicinity is taken and also only available at a high-end price.

When thousands of TLDs are available and all one has to do to get a reg fee domain is add an extra letter or word, how valuable can any new TLD domain be? Keep in mind how many .COM domains are registered and compare that to the real registration figure for most new TLDs. Short, meaningful, e-commerce related .COMs are hard to find.

Just wait for the next big xyz

In my comments way back, I’ve backed xyz from the beginning. Rational public and business can identify with xyz could be because it’s a complete extension as is com
