A few days ago, I announced that I’m interested in selling DomainDiscussions.com but that I’m also open to partnerships suggestions.
To be perfectly honest though, while I am open to any suggestions (feel free to email me at admin@domainingtips.com), I’m not really sure I believe in partnerships unless the roles are clearly defined right from the beginning.
Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely examples of partnerships that went great in the domaining industry and beyond.
But in my opinion, most partnerships will fail because the terms weren’t clearly defined right from the beginning.
And I’m not talking about a huge contract or anything like that.
I’m simply talking about having a few honest discussions (no pun intended) about who will do what.
Otherwise, each party will try to do as little as possible, while expecting the other person or people to work more; I’m sure a lot of you can give me countless examples of partnerships which failed for this very reason.
How much time are you willing to invest?
What do you expect in return?
Under which circumstances would you feel that the partnership is fair for everyone and under which circumstances would you feel frustrated?
… these are a few reasonable questions that should be answered *before* you get started.
In my case, for DomainDiscussions.com, I want to make 4 things perfectly clear:
1) I’m extremely busy with all sorts of projects, so the time I’d be able to invest would be minimal
2) Therefore, I’m willing to offer a % share that makes up for this
3) I am not willing to hand over ownership of the domain (if you want ownership, the only solution would be buying DomainDiscussions as opposed to becoming a partner)
4) I’ll take care of all hosting-related issues (server costs, server maintenance and all that good stuff)
In other words, I’m willing to offer a very high share of the profits to make up for the fact that the time I’m able to invest in the project is minimal but I will not hand over the domain and that is not negotiable.
If this sounds reasonable, shoot me an email at admin@domainingtips.com.
If not, then a partnership is probably not the best idea and a better approach would be buying DomainDiscussions. Feel free to make me an offer by sending an email to admin@domainingtips.com.
That’s pretty much it, just wanted to make everything clear right from the beginning so as to avoid confusions.
Partnerships *can* be a great solution but I only believe in this approach if the terms are clearly outlined and understood right from the beginning.

I think you should start a couple of petitions to stop the Great Bastard Plan, i.e. stop the raising of prices to force domainers and also little businesses to loose their assets and stop search engines who have the absurd pretense to run gTLDs.

I have several postings on my blog about my domain partnership experiences. For example, see http://www.impulsecorp.com/partnerships-part-3
