Am I the Only One Who Doesn’t Understand Why .UK Domains Are Necessary?

Posted on 10 September 2013 by Andrei

I don’t get it, I honestly don’t.

Why would they launch dot uk domains at this stage in the game?

Sure, it would have made sense initially and if they launched .uk and .co.uk at the same time, .uk would have most likely been the top dog (just like .de, .fr and so on).

But the past is the past and you can’t change that.

Launching .uk in 2013 just doesn’t make sense because .co.uk *is* .uk de facto. In other words, it’s the most widely used extension in the UK by far and launching a confusingly similar competing extension right now would be a mistake in my opinion.

I’m sure pretty much all British domainers agree with me and I’m just as sure the average Internet user feels the same way.

Maybe I’m missing something.

Maybe this is somehow a revolutionary idea, I don’t know.

But in my opinion, it just doesn’t add up.

It would have been a good idea at the beginning, it might have even been a reasonable idea a few years after that but doing it in 2013… I just don’t get it.

    Why? Money.

This is what happens when money takes priority over consumer interests.

It is basically a big middle finger to anyone who has invested in, or built a business on .CO.UK. There is certainly no need for it at this point.
