Facebook Saying Goodbye to Places and Daily Deals

Posted on 28 August 2011 by Andrei

Places and Daily deals are (or should I say were) some of Facebook’s interesting expansion approaches but they ultimately decided to discontinue both projects.

Here is an official FB statement about why they are no longer interested in keeping Daily Deals alive:

After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We remain committed to building products to help local businesses connect with people, like Ads, Pages, Sponsored Stories, and Check-in Deals. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.

I think this was smart move on there part, the daily deal sites are losing there edge and places never took off to begin with.

Daily deals wasn’t doing well in the first place, so no pint in keeping it around. And places was a total flop, I hardly saw any one interested in that feature.
