The biz model behind forums is virtually dead, with everything that has happened with social networks past few years. It’s easy to launch a forum, but to sustain growth and activity…. Yikes!

@wannadevelop.com: the thing is, forums stood the test of time, just like blogs. Web 2.0 sites will come and go in my opinion but there will always be “fundamentals”. There will always be a place for forums, just like there will always be a place for blogs. They’re an extremely effective environment for sharing opinions. If you want to ask a general question, you start a thread. If you want to contribute, you post. If you want to reach out to just one person, you send a Private Message.
It all makes sense and IMHO, forums/blogs/email/etc. will always be constants. If a certain business model is only let’s say 1-2 years old, it makes sense to say something along the lines of “it might be a fad and nothing more”. Maybe the business model will stick, maybe not.
But if 5 years have passed and the business model is still valid, things definitely stand quite a bit differently. If let’s say 10 years have passed, it should be clear that the business model in question is here to stay and if a certain business model has been around since 1996 (that’s when the first web-based forums appeared, if I’m not mistaken: there were mediums which could be labeled as forums before that but I’ll limit myself to analyzing web-based forums to be fair), it should be clear that we’re talking about a keeper

In “business” since 2002, domainstate.com was valued at $45k or something like that when it was put up for sale.. I personally think the new owners overpaid at least by 2-3x, but whatever. Their money. Can waste / invest it however they like.
Do ask Mr. Latona how cctlds.com is doing and whether it’s a good business overall.

@wannadevelop.com: the thing is, the same principle is valid when it comes to social media websites and just about everything else. For every successful website you show me (and I’m sure you know just as well as I do that most social media websites which are considered successful aren’t even profitable atm, they’re only running thanks to the VC funding they have at their disposal), I’ll be able to show you tons of failures.
The fact that forums have been around since 1996 says a lot IMO, I’m really curious if people will even remember what a tweet was 15 years from now
