Introduction to a new contributor to DomainingTips.com

Hi, domainers my name is Graham Haynes and together with Andrei I shall also be blogging on DomainingTips.com. My angle is going to be how to create a great business leveraging a generic domain, increasing its worth exponentially.  I have often thought that main street and big businesses do not understand the value of a great name and what better way than to demonstrate it by building a business on one and selling it on for 10s of millions. Hopefully, you can take some elements of how I will build a business to show potential domain buyers examples of what can be achieved on a great domain.

Back in 2009 I purchased BedroomFurniture.co.uk for $50,000 and have built a business on it from scratch which turned over $10,000,000 last year. It’s giving me an insight of what can be achieved so last year I purchased Furniture.co.uk for 600,000 USD and I am just at the beginning of starting to build a business on it that I intend to sell to a big player for £100million.

I will take you on that journey. It will be a long journey no quick mini site no niche website this will be the real deal.

The first step is to get the best generic domain in a market that has no major brands, like furniture. Next is the challenge of branding, how the hell do you create character in such a generic brand like Furniture.co.uk? And that brand needs – to connect with people, compete, grow and get people buying or simply thinking.

What does our customers really want to see in a brand? And, while digital may be ubiquitous, I think there’s still a place for a beautiful brochure, packaging, leaflet or poster campaign.

This is what I am going to be working on over the next few weeks creating a brand in the domain name Furniture.co.uk and I will share my ideas and the final branding before we start on building the website.
