Idiocracy?

Posted on 16 January 2013 by Andrei

Is it just me or is the general population becoming dumber and more shallow with each day that passes? In my own country, we had *one* TV station which was considered tabloid-ish a few years ago and everyone made fun of it. Now, *all* TV stations (ok, almost) are like that. I don’t live in the US but I’ve been following the US entertainment industry as well and it seems the situation is similar.

Stupid reality shows.

Debates which (more and more) are becoming emotional rather than rational.

Instead of caring about the economy and things which affect them directly, people would rather find out what celebrities had for dinner.

… and the list could go on and on.

I’m noticing this in my own country and the situation seems similar in the US as well.

Maybe it’s just me getting older, I don’t know but no matter how subjective I am, it’s painfully obvious that the world we live in is becoming a tabloid.

CNN has always been trash. The rest are just starting to catch up.

Facebook is built on the same premise. The generations coming behind are celebrity crazed fools who don’t give a damn about the world around them apart from what you outline above. Everybody can be a celebrity nowadays, it costs nothing more than a big ego. Apple is another example of exploiting spoilt brats and the “me first” syndrome. Good on these companies for taking idiots for what they are worth, but in the end all we are left with is a dumb down society.

You mention TV, but the internet 10 years ago was also a far more exciting place and it too has dropped to about the same level as the TV you complain about. Btw, I don’t think it is that you are getting older, you are just witnessing the reversal of peak intelligence, something which scientists argued would happen eventually. Everybody seems to be a follower nowadays, whether it is reality tv, twitter, apple’s latest gadget or facebook. Nothing else matters to Generation F.

Yep, it’s called idolatry. Idol worshiping plain and simple.

I stopped watching TV over 10 years ago. And lived happily ever after.

The “Great Generation” had the quickest, brightest, snappiest minds I ever saw in the U.S. They were the WWII generation. Every generation below them has been slower, dumber, etc… but still fairly bright.

However, all of a sudden, this iPhone generation are living, walking brainless zombies, with little to no personality even. So many are just literally slow in the head. If you look into some of their eyes they convey emptiness. It is really bizarre.

It’s a strange, new world for sure, sad too.

@Danile….I agree. I got rid of TV in 2001, never looked back.
