Do You Treat Service Providers With Respect?

Posted on 13 June 2013 by Andrei

Since I specialize in providing online services, I hope you’ll find my experience useful and also hope it will at least slightly change the way support guys, account reps and so on are treated.

I’m sure all of you know that I own a hosting company, DomainingServers.com and some of you guys also ordered articles from Articles.biz, the site through which my company provides article writing services.

A lot of very talented people (hosting tech crew, writers and so on) are doing the best they can to keep customers satisfied.

I know how hard some of these people work and therefore, it bugs me whenever I see domainers/webmasters/whatever treat service providers as though they’re slaves.

Not good.

Talking about running a business is easy, criticizing a business is easy.

Running one is hard.

The paradox when it comes to online services like hosting is this: when things are running smoothly, most people (most, not all) never bother to say something nice to those who work behind the scenes. But when even the slightest thing goes wrong… watch out šŸ™‚

I’ve been guilty of this myself and if you’re honest with yourself, so have you.

But since I started running online businesses, I’ve become a lot more reasonable, partly because I understand that there’s a real person behind the screen.

Not a robot, not a computer algorithm, a real person.

The support staff at your hosting company.

The account reps at your domain registrar.

… and so on.

I know technical problems are frustrating but you have no right to “punish” the staff member who is trying to help you.

Be polite, explain your problem and provide feedback if necessary.

Again, I’m not a hypocrite.

I’ve been guilty of losing my temper as well and only understood just how wrong I was when I started running businesses.

Trust me, offering hosting at $0.98 per month is not easy for me as the owner of DomainingServers.com and especially for the team that’s making sure everything’s working properly.

Trust me, offering domains at prices as low as those GoDaddy for example has is not easy.

The list could go on and on.

We as domainers and ultimately online consumers are spoiled.

We’re receiving services (hosting, domains, etc.) that are better and better at unbelievably low prices compared to the past.

$0.98 gets you a moth of hosting for all of your domains at DomainingServers.com.

A similar amount is often enough for a domain registration at GoDaddy or other companies whenever there are coupons or special promotions.

Compare these prices to what people paid 10 – 15 years ago and you’ll agree that online consumers are receiving amazing deals.

Offering such prices and keeping the business profitable is incredibly hard.

I’m not saying you should write a poem about the DomainingServers team or about me personally (not that it would be a bad idea haha) for example, I’m simply saying this:

Before criticizing and being rude to the support staff member who is trying to help you, put yourself in that person’s shoes and in the shoes of the person who owns the business in question.

Sorry for the rant, I’m sure other online business owners feel the same way and I can’t stress this enough: always treat service providers with respect and don’t underestimate the amount of work required to keep you happy šŸ™‚
