Learn the Art of Domaining
22 Jul
Today, July 22nd, 2008 Dickinson.com will be auctioned off at the premier one-a-day auction house, Bido.com.
Unlike most auctions where premium domains have high reserves and a preset price level to start on, Dickinson.com will start at $1 and will be listed at no reserve. This means that the domain will be sold to the highest bidder no matter what, and is a true case of letting the market decide on the value of the domain name.
The auction starts at 1:00PM Eastern and will run approximately one hour. The accounts at Bido.com are free and only require a credit card authorization in order to verify the account holders.

From the Bido.com site:
“This domain is highly generic geo/family name. The domain is estimated by Bido to sell for anywhere between US$ 10,000 - US$ 100,000.00 and possibly more!
There are six cities named Dickinson spread across a few different states, and the largest two have populations of 17k and 15.5k respectively. There are three Dickinson counties, several Dickinson universities, few colleges, and numerous companies that are related to the name Dickinson.
Dickinson is also a very popular last name. One notable Dickinson would be with Emily Dickinson. Furthermore, there are over 3000 daily searches on wordtracker.
Aside from the above, there are a large number of end users among people and companies with this name: http://www.google.com/search?q=dickinson.com
A similar domain, branson.com, sold for $1.6 million two years ago.”

This will be an interesting sale. I think this domain name is valuable for the right end user. However, if I owned it, I am not sure what I would have done with it. All the cities are small in my opinion for the effort to build up as a goedomain. I am also curious to see how the domain wholesalers will value it.
I’m new there, but after looking at some domains whois, noticed that all they belong to same owner, who’s owner of bido too. So not sure, if this site is really big enough - looks like several men’s business…
