Two Quick Domaining Security Tips

As a domainer, you have several important accounts, from accounts at various registrars to PayPal accounts or email accounts and so on. Sure, it’s convenient to use the same password for all of them but if you’re serious about domaining… don’t. Just don’t.

Oh and speaking of email accounts, here’s the second tip. Your whois email address and your email address at the registrar should be different. Period. If DomainA.com is registered at RegistrarX.com, the whois email of DomainA.com should not be the email address associated with your RegistrarX.com account.

Why?

Because domain thieves might perform a whois search to extract the whois email of DomainA.com and use the password recovery system of RegistrarX.com to gain access to your account. So as a rule of thumb, the email address associated with RegistrarX.com should not be one of your common ones. If you want to take security to the next level, create a separate email address for each registrar. Sure, some registrars have security protocols in place which make using the password recovery system in a fraudulent manner more difficult but why take chances?

Most people don’t take security-related aspects seriously, don’t be one of them.

… it seems that according to ExtremeTech.com, this might happen as a protest against SOPA. I have to admit, I’m pretty impressed. The online community is clearly against SOPA and people are taking action accordingly.

Personally, I don’t think SOPA will go through because even politicians know that the backlash would be unprecedented. The online community is making it clear that the Internet does not need more regulation and governments need to understand that.

Verisign 2012 Price Increase Coming Soon – Renew Your Domains!

Just a friendly reminder: don’t forget about Verisign’s 2012 price increase. If you want to renew a bunch of domains, I’d recommend doing it before the price increase kicks in. Based on my experience, most registrars (at the very least those operating on thin margins and which would lose money by keeping their current prices) will start charging more, so there’s no time like the present to take action.

Renewal fees do tend to add up, especially if you have a large portfolio, so you might as well renew the domains you want to secure before the 2012 price increase goes live. If you think that the world will end in 2012 though, it won’t matter anyway I guess

Always Use a Coupon, Being a Cheap Bastard Is Worth It!

Most registrars ask whether or not you want to use a coupon at one point or another during the checkout process and I don’t understand why some people underestimate the importance of using coupons. The more domains you have, the more sense it makes to use coupons.

A simple rule: whenever you want to register, renew or transfer domains, check out LiveCodes for a GoDaddy coupon or DomainPromoCodes.com for domain coupons. That’s it, you will always be able to find decent deals for pretty much everything you need and it only takes a few seconds.

For example, here is a $7.49 dot com GoDaddy coupon (this one never expires):

No Love for Tajikistan.com and Congressman.com at NameJet

The two domains (owned by Tucows) did not sell at NameJet, “Reserve Not Met” in both cases. 175 bids by 165 bidders generated a high bid of $10,600 for Tajikistan.com, while 182 bids from 169 bidders generated a high bid of $8,599 for Congressman.com.

In my opinion, there would have been considerably more activity if bidders would have been able to see a reserve range. Without a reserve range, it seems that you’re bidding against yourself with no end in sight, so a lot of bidders probably decided to stay away.

Maybe NJ should make it possible for private sellers to display reserve ranges or maybe even a short description, just my 2 cents.

Random Sunday Question: On a Scale of One to Ten…

… how would you rate your current involvement in the domaining industry at this point and how would you like things to stand in the future? 1 would mean something like “not even a hobby” whereas 10 would mean something like “full time” in an obsessive compulsive way haha.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m in the “10″ region when it comes to both domaining AND development.

domaining = being an investor

development = running a business

Domaining and development complement each other and that’s why I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that it’s 10 all the way as far as both are concerned.

What about my plans for the future? I don’t know about you guys but I DON’T want to retire because I genuinely love what I’m doing. Furthermore, I hate mediocrity and always have, so I guess the answer would be “11″

What about you?

Are you just getting started or are we already talking about something full time?

Oh and what about the future? Do you want to “retire” or become even more involved on a scale of 1 to 10?
