Congrats Andrew! I was browsing TechCrunch and came across their article about Amazon’s potential plans for Casa.com, with DomainNameWire being credited as the source. It’s always nice to come across such posts and it should be obvious to anyone capable of rational thought that our entire industry benefits whenever something like this happens. One step a time, one post at a time, we need to do everything humanly possible to help everyone understand that the domaining industry has its place in the online ecosystem and is here to stay.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure there are loophones which make it possible for you to own some even if you don’t live in Europe. Maybe some loopholes which are similar to the .de one, I’m not 100% sure though. In my opinion, the best thing for the .fr extension and especially for the liquidity of its reseller market would be letting anyone register .fr domains.

It seems that as of this month, PayPal no longer offers international masspay payments at $1 each. Instead of $1, you’ll be paying 2% of the amount that is being sent with a maximum which varies depending on the country you are from and the country you are sending to (in most cases, the maximum seems to be $45).

Now I’m not 100% sure but it seems that the $1 option is still there if both parties are from the US, for example. Ireland seems to also be a country for which $1 masspay payments are still available but as far as most countries are concerned, the $1 masspay option is a thing of the past.

Here is an official FB statement about why they are no longer interested in keeping Daily Deals alive:

After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We remain committed to building products to help local businesses connect with people, like Ads, Pages, Sponsored Stories, and Check-in Deals. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.

This is good news for domainers and let’s face it: there’s no such thing as a “domain killer”. Without domains, the Internet would basically cease to exist. Apps, Facebook, Twitter? These are all impressive projects but if you think they represent “domain killers”, you have a lot to learn about how things work on the Internet.

There are over 108 million dot com + dot net domains at the moment of writing and when it comes to new registrations, we have a 2.7% increase compared to 2010’s 4th quarter. As far as dot com and dot net renewals are concerned, Q1 has brought a pretty decent growth, from 72.7% in Q4 to a respectable 73.8%.

The previously mentioned ~108 million domains have been analyzed, here are the usage conclusions: 21% of them are currently being used as one-page websites, 67% are currently being used as websites with more than one page and 12% aren’t being used at all.
