I am a little confused about the dublicate content. I feel it does get indexed but as you said links are important. But I had a site with good unique content and it got indexed fairly quickly.

Duplicate content penalty is just a myth. =) You can counter it with good link-building.

Great tips here. I think forums and communities have a great opportunity. I’m less of a fan of directories, but think you cover all the obvious and quick ways to develop a domain.
